A comprehensive 1952 government publication and constitutional interpretation produced for the United States Congress, with annotations covering Supreme Court decisions, the Fourth Amendment, and legal reference.
Collector’s Note
Collectors of constitutional history, legal Americana, government publications, and Supreme Court reference works seek early editions of the Constitution Annotated because they preserve how the United States Constitution was interpreted during a specific moment in history.
This substantial 1953 edition captures constitutional scholarship and Supreme Court precedent immediately before many of the landmark civil rights decisions of the Warren Court era. With more than 1,300 pages of constitutional analysis prepared for Congress and the federal government, it serves as both a historical document and a snapshot of mid-century American legal thought.
Published in 1953 by the United States Government Printing Office, this substantial volume of The Constitution of the United States of America: Analysis and Interpretation—commonly known as the Constitution Annotated (CONAN)—provides the text of the Constitution alongside detailed legal analysis and annotations of Supreme Court decisions through June 30, 1952.
Prepared by the Legislative Reference Service of the Library of Congress under the editorship of constitutional scholar Edward Samuel Corwin, the volume was designed as an authoritative reference for members of Congress, government officials, attorneys, educators, and researchers seeking to understand how constitutional provisions had been interpreted by the nation's highest court.
Editor Biography
Edward Samuel Corwin (1878–1963) was a leading American constitutional scholar whose writings helped shape modern interpretations of federal power, judicial review, and the presidency. A longtime Princeton professor and past president of the American Political Science Association, Corwin became one of the most influential voices in early twentieth‑century constitutional thought, capturing the era’s shift toward more activist interpretations of American law.
Corwin served as editor of the landmark 1952 volume The Constitution of the United States of America: Analysis and Interpretation, a comprehensive, article‑by‑article guide that remains a foundational reference. Over his four decades at Princeton, he authored numerous works that defined the field, earning election to the American Philosophical Society in 1936. Corwin died in 1963 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery near his birthplace in Plymouth, Michigan.
Among the topics covered are:
- The Bill of Rights and constitutional amendments
- Searches and seizures under the Fourth Amendment
- Equal suffrage and interpretation of the Nineteenth Amendment
- Separation of powers and federal authority
- Individual liberties and constitutional protections
- Hundreds of Supreme Court decisions shaping constitutional law
Included within the volume is the congressional resolution authorizing preparation of this revised edition. The resolution notes that only 3,000 copies were to be printed, with 2,200 designated for the House of Representatives and 800 for the Senate.
Containing 1,361 pages, this impressive reference work remains an important resource for collectors of legal history, constitutional studies, political science, government publications, and mid-century Americana.
Historical Note
The need for a comprehensive constitutional reference guide became apparent in the early twentieth century as Supreme Court decisions increasingly shaped the practical meaning of constitutional provisions.
The first edition of the Constitution Annotated appeared in 1913. Subsequent editions were periodically revised to incorporate new Supreme Court rulings and evolving constitutional interpretation. This 1953 edition records constitutional jurisprudence as it existed immediately before many transformative decisions involving civil rights, criminal procedure, and voting rights would redefine American law in the decades that followed.
As such, it offers a valuable snapshot of constitutional interpretation during the early Cold War era.
