Visually rich first edition travel and cultural guide of France's Provence region.

Collector’s Note

Part travel guide, part design inspiration, and part cultural study, Colors of Provence captures the beauty of southern France through the colors that define its landscapes, villages, markets, textiles, and cuisine. Richly illustrated with photographs by Heinz Angermayr and written by Provence resident Michel Biehn, this first edition is ideal for travelers, photographers, decorators, Francophiles, and anyone drawn to the timeless charm of the French countryside.

Experience the beauty, culture, and traditions of southern France through the vivid pages of Colors of Provence, a beautifully illustrated first edition published in 1997.

Written by French antiquarian, decorator, and Provence expert Michel Biehn, this visually stunning volume explores the colors that define one of France's most beloved regions. Through the lens of photographer Heinz Angermayr, readers are immersed in lavender fields, village markets, sun-drenched architecture, traditional textiles, gardens, cuisine, and everyday life throughout Provence.

Organized by color, the book explores the symbolic and cultural significance of Provence's most recognizable palette:

  • Red and Orange – village walls, terracotta roofs, and local produce
  • Yellow – sunflowers, lemons, and Mediterranean light
  • Green – herb gardens, olive groves, and countryside landscapes
  • Blue – lavender, ceramics, and Provençal textiles
  • White, Black & Gray – stone architecture and regional craftsmanship

Throughout the book, Biehn combines photography with observations on local traditions, decorative arts, antiques, regional foods, and Provençal living. Authentic recipes, shopping recommendations, and cultural insights make this volume equally appealing as a travel reference, coffee table book, decorating resource, and armchair journey through France.

Artists including Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso were drawn to Provence for its extraordinary light and color. Colors of Provence beautifully demonstrates why the region continues to inspire artists, designers, photographers, and travelers today.
