1940s Hand-Colorized Pony Scene – H. Armstrong Roberts Commercial Proof

Collector’s Note

An original hand-colorized commercial proof attributed to pioneering stock photographer H. Armstrong Roberts. The composition matches documented Roberts photographs of the same child models and pony, suggesting this piece originates from the same 1940s studio series.

An original hand-colorized commercial print depicting a young girl seated on a pony while a boy gently holds the reins in a meadow setting. The image captures the idyllic optimism characteristic of mid-20th-century American commercial photography.

Although the exact pose has not been located in online archives, several photographs of the same two models in identical wardrobe and setting appear in the Getty Images archive, attributed to H. Armstrong Roberts (creative #81774639, #81774641, #81773063), circa 1940s. This strongly suggests the present work was produced from the same staged photographic session.

The print is hand-colorized rather than mechanically printed. Close inspection reveals even tonal transitions and the absence of halftone dot patterning, consistent with studio proof preparation for advertising or calendar reproduction. The rust-colored border and rough-cut edges indicate production handling, typical of commercial layout or mounting preparation.

The print is in very good condition with bright colors and no damage. Size is 7” x 9” (image area, not including border). No printing on back.

Historical Reference

This commercial art proof was acquired in Joliet, Illinois, historically home to the Gerlach-Barklow Company, one of the leading American art calendar publishers of the early twentieth century. While the print itself is unmarked, the discovery location reflects the broader Midwestern calendar printing industry active during this period.

Framing Appeal

This pastoral pony scene frames beautifully in natural wood or white, complementing cottage, farmhouse, nursery, or equestrian-themed interiors. The soft hand-applied color and narrative charm make it especially suited for children’s spaces or gallery walls featuring mid-century Americana.

Artist Biography

H. Armstrong Roberts (1883–1947) was a pioneering American photographer and founder of one of the earliest large-scale stock photography libraries. Originally a journalist, Roberts began producing his own images when suitable photographs proved difficult to obtain. By the 1920s he had developed an archive that eventually exceeded half a million negatives, supplying publishers and advertisers worldwide.

Roberts is credited with producing one of the first true stock photographs—Group in Front of Tri Motor Airplane (1920)—notable for its use of model releases, establishing standards that shaped the commercial photography industry. His archive, later known as Retrofile, continues to influence mid-century advertising aesthetics and remains highly collectible.

Just a quick heads‑up: the photos reveal details far better than text alone, so they’re worth a close review.
