Antique Villeroy & Boch Gaudy Stick Spatter Plate

This antique gaudy-style stick spatter plate by Villeroy & Boch dates to the late 19th century (circa 1874–1909) and showcases the bold, expressive decoration prized by collectors of European porcelain.

Hand-painted in vivid, saturated color, the plate features vibrant red cabbage roses, deep purple-blue bellflowers, and mustard-yellow blossoms. The design was applied using the distinctive stick spatter technique, creating a lively, textured surface with charming variations unique to each piece.

The exuberant palette and floral composition reflect the decorative traditions of the Victorian era — where bright color and strong contrast were celebrated.

Measuring 8½ inches in diameter, the plate has a slightly deeper well than many period examples, giving it both visual presence and practical versatility as a salad or dessert plate.

The reverse bears the Villeroy & Boch backstamp along with embossed pattern number N21 8, confirming authenticity and period manufacture.

📚 Collector’s Note: Gaudy stick spatter is a 19th-century hand-decorating technique in which vibrant colors were applied to porcelain using small sticks, pads, or brushes to create bold, dotted floral designs. Unlike transferware, each piece was individually painted, resulting in subtle variations that add to its charm and authenticity.

The term “gaudy” originally referred simply to the bright, saturated colors popular in the Victorian era. German makers such as Villeroy & Boch produced some of the finest examples, and today these lively wares are prized for their expressive folk-art character and handcrafted appeal.
