Bold Color & Folk Charm — A Striking Gaudy Welsh–Style Belgian Bowl

Collector’s Note

Pottery from Manufacture Impériale et Royale of Nimy, Belgium is admired for its blend of European craftsmanship and bold decorative style. Pieces featuring vibrant florals and spatterware or “stickware” borders are often compared to Gaudy Welsh and Gaudy Dutch ceramics, making them especially appealing to collectors who appreciate richly colored, hand-decorated tablewares from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A beautifully hand-painted large, rimmed bowl by Impériale et Royale (Nimy, Belgium), dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. This striking piece features a vibrant floral design rendered in bold red and blue blossoms, accented by green leaves and delicate yellow vine details across a creamy white ground.

The wide rim is decorated with a distinctive black and white “stickware” pattern, creating a strong visual frame around the central motif. A red border—echoing the floral palette—adds cohesion and enhances the overall decorative impact. The lively coloration and confident brushwork reflect the enduring appeal of Gaudy Welsh and Gaudy Dutch styles, while maintaining its distinct Belgian character.

The bowl measures approximately 10 ¾″ in diameter with a 1 ½″ deep rim, offering both visual presence and versatility for display.

The underside bears the Impériale et Royale backstamp, featuring a crown above “NIMY,” encircled by Manufacture Impériale et Royale – Fabrication Belge – Made in Belgium, along with an impressed “K” mark. This mark dates the piece to approximately 1890–1910.

Condition is excellent for its age, with no cracks, chips, or crazing noted. Minor glaze smudging on the reverse is present, consistent with hand-painted production and typical of the period.

✨ Decorating Appeal

With its bold color palette and generous scale, this piece makes a striking statement on a wall, in a plate rack, or as a centerpiece. Its folk-inspired pattern pairs beautifully with English, French Country, or cottage interiors, adding warmth, color, and a sense of collected history to the space.
