Prayers for All Occasions reflects mid-century Christian devotional practice during changing post-war times and concerns of elections, peace, war, and international conflict. It serves as both a devotional guide and a snapshot of American religious life during the early Cold War period.
Prayers for All Occasions is a compact devotional handbook issued as a companion volume to Prayers New and Old. The pocket-sized prayer book was designed to assist Christians in both daily devotions and life's special circumstances. The volume contains more than one hundred prayers, affirmations, devotions, and meditations organized for easy reference and regular use.
The prayer book was compiled by Francis John Moore and published by Forward Movement Publications of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1961. Forward Movement was founded by the Episcopal Church in the 1930s to encourage daily prayer, Bible study, and Christian discipleship. Through prayer books, devotionals, pamphlets, and educational materials, the organization became one of the most influential publishers of Anglican devotional literature in the United States.
Author Biography
Francis John Moore was an Episcopal clergyman and devotional writer associated with Forward Movement Publications. His work focused on providing practical resources for personal prayer and spiritual formation. In compiling Prayers for All Occasions, Moore assembled prayers addressing both everyday devotional life and the broader concerns of church, community, and nation, creating a resource that reflected the spiritual needs of mid-twentieth-century American Christians.
Contents include morning and evening devotions, acts of praise and adoration, daily prayers, family prayers, grace before meals, intercessions, prayers for the Church and the nation. Specific church prayers for Holy Communion, litanies and meditations, and benedictions are also included.
Special occasion prayers address what to pray before an election, in time of war, national concerns and civil strife, during illness or medical procedures, for the armed forces, and the bereaved.
Very good vintage ephemera condition. A small chip is present at the upper right corner of the front cover, and light corner creasing appears at the upper and lower right corners, consistent with being carried in a pocket. Pages remain complete, clean, and unmarked. Staples are secure and binding remains sound.
