1948 Pilgrim’s Inn by Elizabeth Goudge | Decorative Post-War Literary Classic.

A beautifully preserved 1948 American first edition of Pilgrim’s Inn by Elizabeth Goudge, published by Coward-McCann of New York. Bound in rich burgundy cloth with a deep green spine label, this post-war literary classic retains the warm, timeless presentation associated with Goudge’s beloved English novels.

Second in The Eliots of Damerosehay trilogy, Pilgrim’s Inn was published outside the United States under the alternate title The Herb of Grace. The novel blends family drama, spiritual renewal, and gentle English domestic storytelling—hallmarks that made Elizabeth Goudge one of the most admired mid-20th-century authors of inspirational and historical fiction.

The volume features especially charming, illustrated endpapers with portrait drawings of the novel’s characters, adding strong decorative and collectible appeal. Copies retaining such clean interior presentation and strong cloth coloring are increasingly difficult to locate.

The copyright page lists only the 1948 copyright date with no additional printings noted, consistent with Coward-McCann first edition publishing practices of the period.

Collector’s Note

Elizabeth Goudge’s novels have experienced renewed interest among collectors of classic English fiction and comforting literary fiction rooted in place, spirituality, and family life. Her 1946 novel The Little White Horse was later cited by J. K. Rowling as one of the books that directly influenced the atmosphere and emotional tone of the Harry Potter series. Early Goudge hardcovers—particularly those with decorative bindings and illustrated interiors—appeal to collectors of mid-century English literature, cottagecore aesthetics, and traditional domestic fiction that bridges children’s and adult literary audiences.

Hardcover book measuring approximately standard octavo size with 346 pages. Very good-excellent condition. Tight and clean with crisp pages and strong cloth binding. Minor fading to lower spine and light dust accumulation to the fore edge. No dust jacket. Interior pages remain notably clean with attractive illustrated endpapers and no writing or markings observed.
