1940–41 Indianapolis Capitals Hockey Program — Early AHL Era with Rich Ads

Collector’s Note

Early‑season programs from the Indianapolis Capitals are increasingly scarce, especially those with intact covers and complete advertising sections. This issue is a standout for AHL historians, Capitals collectors, and enthusiasts of mid‑century sports advertising.

A vibrant, display‑worthy example of early AHL and Indianapolis hockey history, an original Indianapolis Capitals Hockey Preview Program from the 1940–41 season, issued during the team’s early years in the American Hockey League. The Capitals played in Indianapolis from 1939 to 1952, serving as a key developmental team for the Detroit Red Wings and producing several notable players.

This 26‑page program features player photographs, stats, and profiles, including:

  • Buck Jones
  • Lester “King” Tooke
  • Les Douglas
  • Hec Kilrea

A full‑page spread is devoted to Coach Herbie Lewis, complete with his portrait and a series of humorous Allen Lynn satire cartoons—a signature feature of Capitals programs from this era.

The program is also packed with full and partial‑page advertisements from well‑known Indianapolis and national brands, including Hotel Severin, Raleigh Cigarettes, Kessler’s Whiskey and Old Forester.

Printed with a red paper cover, the program measures approximately 7" x 10⅛". Very good vintage condition overall. The cover has pulled slightly from the top staple, and there is a small ½" tear at the top of the binding. Interior pages are clean and intact with expected age toning.
