On Treasure Island — Big Band Era Tropical Moonlight Romance by Cliff Miska

Collector’s Note

Published in 1935 during the rise of the Big Band Era, “On Treasure Island” was written by lyricist Edgar Leslie and composer Joe Burke and popularized by Tommy Dorsey. The dramatic tropical cover by Cliff Miska captures the romantic escapism that defined mid-1930s popular music.

Original 1935 sheet music for On Treasure Island, lyrics by Edgar Leslie (1885–1976) and music by Joe Burke (1884–1950), published by Joe Morris Music Co., New York.

The cover prominently notes the pair as the writers of In a Little Gypsy Tea Room, a classic Tin Pan Alley marketing device linking the song to their previous success. The ballad became a Hit Parade favorite and was famously recorded by Tommy Dorsey on the Victor label.

The cover art, illustrated by Cliff Miska, presents a cinematic moonlit scene set on a tiny tropical island. A couple sits beneath wind-swept palms while a yacht drifts in the distance and a small dinghy at the shoreline. The deep indigo sky, scattered with stars, and Miska’s soft gradients create a dreamy, atmospheric composition that reflects the era’s fascination with exotic romance and far-off destinations.

Condition on the 9" x 12" piece is very good. Previous owner’s name penned neatly at the top right of the front cover, no creasing or tears. Structurally sound and ready to display. Packaged in a protective sleeve.

Framing Appeal

The rich indigo night sky and deep red shoreline create a striking Art Deco–era tropical statement piece. Beautiful matted in ivory or linen and framed in dark wood or black, ideal for a music room, coastal interior, or vintage gallery wall.
