Colorfully illustrated 1928 juvenile aviation biography celebrating Charles Lindbergh’s historic transatlantic flight.
Published in 1928 by The John C. Winston Company, The Boy’s Story of Lindbergh the Lone Eagle by Richard J. Beamish captures the excitement and worldwide fascination surrounding Charles Lindbergh’s groundbreaking solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Spirit of St. Louis.
Timely written in the same period of Lindbergh’s historic 1927 flight from Roosevelt Field in New York to Le Bourget Field near Paris, the book recounts the young aviator’s rise from U.S. airmail pilot to international hero. Beamish details Lindbergh’s daring nonstop journey, the engineering and endurance behind the Spirit of St. Louis, and the extraordinary public celebrations that followed throughout France, England, Belgium, and the United States.
Bound in dark green cloth with a mounted full-color illustration panel to the front cover, this edition features one of the more visually striking aviation bindings of the late 1920s juvenile publishing era. The cover artwork depicts Lindbergh in flight gear beneath his monoplane, framed by inspirational banners reading “Clean Living,” “Preparedness,” and “Courage.” The book also includes black-and-white photographs and illustrations documenting Lindbergh, his aircraft, and scenes connected to the famous transatlantic flight.
Collector’s Note
Books published immediately after Lindbergh’s 1927 flight capture the height of America’s early aviation obsession, when pilots became modern folk heroes and aircraft symbolized innovation, courage, and national pride. Decorative juvenile aviation books from this era are increasingly collected for both their historical significance and dramatic cover art, making them excellent display pieces for aviation libraries, study shelves, and vintage Americana interiors.
The 320-page hardcover is in good vintage condition overall with age-related wear, rubbing, and scattered foxing throughout. The front hinge has begun separating from the text block, though pages remain intact and generally secure. Cover illustration remains vibrant and highly displayable.
