1920s Whitman Mother Goose Rhymes — Ruth E. Newton Illustrated Edition

Whitman Publishing was one of the most prolific American producers of children’s books in the early 20th century, known for affordable editions designed for heavy use. Ruth E. Newton’s illustrations helped define the look of Whitman’s nursery‑rhyme and fairy‑tale titles, making her work especially collectible today.

Here is an early 1920s edition of Mother Goose Rhymes published by Whitman Publishing Co., Racine, Wisconsin. Though undated, the design, paper stock, and illustration style align with Whitman’s 1920s output. The book contains 48 unnumbered pages of traditional nursery rhymes accompanied by delightful illustrations signed by Ruth E. Newton, who illustrated more than 40 titles for Whitman.

This edition appears to have been produced on low‑cost, coloring‑book‑grade paper, a common choice for Whitman’s children’s activity titles. As a result, it shows expected age‑related wear, including foxing, browning, and paper crumbling, but remains a charming and usable source of long‑forgotten rhymes and period illustration.

The book measures approximately 8 ½” x 11 ¼”child’s name is written on the front cover—typical of early children’s books and often appreciated for its sense of provenance.

Even in its fragile state, this is a wonderful example of early 20th‑century children’s publishing and a lovely reference for collectors of Whitman, Mother Goose variants, or Ruth E. Newton’s work. Because of the condition, copy may be useful for research and craft use.
