Romantic Victorian Opaline Glass — A Charming Pair of Hand-Painted Bristol Mantel Vases
Collector’s Note
Bristol glass became highly fashionable during the Victorian era for its creamy opaline surface and finely detailed enamel decoration. Though associated with earlier English glasshouses, many late 19th-century examples were created as decorative art pieces prized for their romantic floral motifs. Pairs like these were often displayed on mantels or étagères and remain especially desirable when preserved together.
A charming pair of late 19th-century Bristol glass mantle vases, crafted in soft white opaline glass and delicately hand-painted with ripe cherries, leafy branches, and spring blossoms. Their airy, semi-opaque finish and botanical decoration reflect the romantic aesthetic so beloved in Victorian decorative arts.
These mold-blown vases feature raised enamel decoration, with each cherry cluster and blossom showing subtle variation—a hallmark of true hand craftsmanship rather than transfer decoration. Silvery gold gilt accents highlight the scalloped rims, stepped bases, and flowing branch motifs, adding a refined shimmer that enhances their display presence.
Their elegant urn form makes them especially well suited for mantel, shelf, or cabinet styling, where their height and paired symmetry create a balanced and collected look. Whether displayed together or incorporated into a larger arrangement of antique glass and ceramics, they bring warmth, color, and period charm to the space.
✨ Decorating Appeal
Perfect for mantel styling or flanking a mirror or clock, this pair brings softness and symmetry to traditional interiors. Their delicate palette and hand-painted detail make them a natural fit for French Country, Victorian, or cottage-inspired spaces, where layered textures and collected objects create a sense of warmth and history.
Each vase measures just under 11″ tall and approximately 4″ wide, with a depth of about 2″ and a base diameter of 3 ¾″.
Condition varies between the two pieces. One vase is in near excellent antique condition, while the second has a hairline crack running down the back. The crack is not visible from the front when displayed. Both show minor gilt and paint wear consistent with age, with no chips or repairs noted. Please review all photographs closely for condition details.
