Choose Your Project — 1970s Knitting, Dressmaking & Needlework Guides
Collector’s Note
Golden Hands publications are prized for their detailed, step-by-step instruction and wide variety of projects—offering a practical and creative snapshot of 1970s home crafting culture.
Golden Hands was a weekly partwork series published by Marshall Cavendish of London in 1971–1972, designed as a comprehensive home-study guide to knitting, dressmaking, crochet, embroidery, and decorative needlework. Issued in 75 parts (referred to as “Parts” rather than issues), the series combined expert instruction with richly illustrated, easy step-by-step projects.
Core subjects such as knitting, dressmaking, and crochet appear throughout the series, alongside rotating topics including embroidery, patchwork, rug-making, macramé, lacework, and toy making. Many issues also feature SnipStrip, a project element designed for simple, creative work—often suitable for younger makers. The magazines measure 9” x 11 ¾” and are in very good condition overall, showing typical age-related wear.
Sold individually, Volume 1 includes Parts 1-2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15. Select your favorite part from the options above.
Publisher's Note
Marshall Cavendish was founded in London in 1968 by Norman Marshall and Patrick Cavendish. It gained international fame for its "partwork" publications—magazines or books released in sequential parts—covering diverse topics such as home-study crafts, history, and the arts. Iconic series like Golden Hands helped establish the brand as a leader in illustrated reference and educational content. Today, the company is a subsidiary of the Times Publishing Group.
