A substantial and increasingly scarce genealogical reference, The Gump Family in America 1732–1983 documents more than 250 years of the Gump/Gumpp family line, beginning with Johann Georg Gumpp (1709–1792) and Rosina Mack Gumpp (1705–1769), who immigrated from Baden, Germany to Philadelphia in 1732. After settling in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, their descendants — who adopted the spelling Gump — migrated westward into Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and beyond.

Compiled by Arlo Kenneth Gump and based on decades of research by Ethel Young Gump and Dorothy Gump Jackson, this volume is one of the most complete treatments of the family. Unlike many surname studies, it includes narrative snippets, contextual notes, and personal details that illuminate how various branches lived, worked, and moved across early American communities.

The book is richly supported by historic family photographs, including 19th‑century reunion portraits and formal studio images. These photographs — some more than a century old — provide rare visual documentation of the extended Gump line and allied families.

Contents include:

  • German Origins: Baden, Württemberg, and pre‑immigration context
  • 1732 Arrival: Philadelphia passenger lists and early Pennsylvania settlement
  • Generational Charts: Clear numbering system (G41‑45, etc.) for tracing branches
  • Allied Families: Barndollar, Herchelroth, Martin, May, Stucki/Stuckey, Weller, Williams, Williard, and others
  • Appendix: Additional allied families and research notes

For researchers of German‑American immigration, Pennsylvania Dutch settlement, Midwestern migration, or Baden‑origin families, this is a strong primary resource.

Clean, tight binding; gilt title bright. Pages are unmarked. Includes all photographic plates. Light shelf wear consistent with age.

Author Biography

Arlo Kenneth Gump (1909–1984) was born in Noble County, Indiana to Charles Orlo Gump and Gertrude McBride. Drawing on extensive research compiled by his extended family — especially the lifelong work of Ethel Young Gump, who was 98 when the book was published — Arlo spent the final decade of his life organizing, editing, and preparing this comprehensive genealogy. Gateway Press released the book in 1983, one year before his death.
