Compuesta por Idabelle Smith Firestone (1874–1954), esposa de Harvey Samuel Firestone, fundador de Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, esta conmovedora balada se volvió profundamente personal para la familia Firestone.

En 1941, Firestone colaboró con la profesora de Juilliard Madeleine Marshall para completar el acompañamiento lírico.
