Compuesta por Idabelle Smith Firestone (1874–1954), esposa de Harvey Samuel Firestone, fundador de Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, esta conmovedora balada se volvió profundamente personal para la familia Firestone.
En 1941, Firestone colaboró con la profesora de Juilliard Madeleine Marshall para completar el acompañamiento lírico. La canción fue dedicada a su difunto esposo e hija y más tarde se convirtió en el tema del programa de música clásica de difusión nacional Voice of Firestone, patrocinado por la empresa familiar.
