Tin-glazed known as faïence in France, was extremely popular in the 19th century.  Some of the finest examples were made in the town of Quimper, France pronounced “kem-pair” beginning in the late seventeenth century.

This wonderful hand painted HENRIOT QUIMPER WHITE GLAZE FLAT CUP AND SAUCER features a Breton peasant man and flowers on the cup and a single flower motif on the center of the saucer.  The cup's handle is square-shaped and the saucer is deep.  Both pieces are trimmed in yellow and blue and in great condition with no chips or cracks.

The set measures:

  • Cup:  4" wide without the handle, 5 ¼” with the handle and 2 ½” high
  • Saucer: 6 ½” wide by 1" high

The bases are stamped HENRIOT QUIMPER with the words, entièrement décoré à main in a half circle below.  Hand-painted on the cup base are the form and decor marks, "F 351" and "D 118", which date the piece from 1968 to 1983.  They also signifies the set was from the Henriot-based production of Les Faïenceries de Quimper.  The artists initials, PG is hand-painted on the base as well.
