This antique FIRST BASEMAN BASEBALL MITT was crafted by A.J. Reach Company and features an embossed endorsement from John J. "Johnny" McCarthy. During the 1930s and 1940s, McCarthy was a popular professional baseball player, known for his eleven seasons playing first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, and Boston Braves.
The manufacturer's mark, REACH is embossed on the leather rather than using a cloth patch logo. While the lacing remains intact, the wrist strap is torn.
Also embossed is the model number, 261, along with a USA patent pending. The patent pending number is hard to decipher, but it is possible that Edwin W. Till designed the glove. In May 1930, Till, as an assignor to the A.J. Reach Company, filed a patent for a similar design. Till was focused on enhancing the functionality of baseball glove wrist straps and finding a secure way to keep the mitt on players' hands without the risk of injury from buckles or metal fastenings. An image of the original patent drawing is included for reference.

Reach was a key figure in the early days of baseball, both as a player and a businessman, and even used his success to establish the Philadelphia Phillies franchise.
