CAPE COD 1876 COLLECTION Sandwich Glass Covered Butter Dish

Regular price $22.00 $0.00

Availability: 0

Featuring a COVERED BUTTER DISH from the 1876 CAPE COD COLLECTION by Avon. The collection is reminiscent of early American pressed glass called “Sandwich Glass” that featured lacy, intricate designs, fine background stippling, and exquisite brilliance which reflected the superb craftsmanship of its makers.

Like early “Sandwich” glass, the butter dish is of great quality and heavy, weighing a little over 1 pound and 8 ounces. It measures about 3 ½” wide by 7" long. Avon is stamped on the bottom.  The butter dish is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.

The deep ruby red would make a perfect mix with other reds and greens during the winter holidays and will carry through into your Valentine’s Day décor. Later, bring the pattern back out to mix with your summer red, white and blue décor.

Sandwich Glass and the Avon 1876 Cape Cod Collection:  Many of the detailed designs of this prized glass were produced by the Boston & Sandwich Glass Works founded on Cape Cod in 1825. Other companies in the regions competed, but the popularity of “Sandwich” pieces resulted in the name becoming a generic term for pressed glass. This unique Avon 1876 Cape Cod Collection was inspired by the classic Roman Rosette pattern.

The Cape Cod Collection name commemorates the spirit of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial, the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Cape Cod, the area where Sandwich glass originated. Avon introduced its 1876 Cape Cod Collection produced by Wheaton Glass in 1975. The glassware was discontinued by Avon in 1993.
