Offering a wonderful antique slip-decorated STONEWARE HANGING SALT CELLAR or BOX from the late 1800s.

The hand-painted cobalt blue slip pattern features a feathery fern design and the word, Salt printed in a calligraphy font across the front.  The wood lid opens with a set of small copper or brass hinges.  The cellar has a scalloped back with an opening so it can be hung on the wall.

The wood lid is in very good condition and intact.  Often the wood lids on hanging salt cellars are missing.  There is a repair to the pottery on the back near the top and an area of missing glaze on the inside. There is also the crazing and pitting common due to the firing process of this type of pottery.  There is also an area inside that looks somewhat like a crack but its been glazed over so it must have been part of the firing process as well.

The salt cellar measures 4" tall by 5 ½” wide without the scalloped back.  With the scalloped back and hole, it measures 5 ¾” high.
