CHICKEN SERVER WITH COVER Hull Pottery House 'n Garden Mirror Brown "Drip" Very Large 13 ⅝” Late 1960s to 1986
Hull Pottery Company debuted its popular House 'n Garden line in 1960 when it changed its focus to casual dinnerware. Originally, the line was produced only in Mirror Brown, often referred to as brown drip. Later, tangerine, green agate, butterscotch were added.
Although Mirror Brown was the most popular glaze color offered in the line, a complete large 13 ⅝” wide House 'n Garden SERVER WITH CHICKEN COVER in Mirror Brown is difficult to find as a set today. Possibly because Hull offered the Server (#557) and the Cover (#575) separately or as a set. There was also the option to choose an Open Baker (#558) with the Cover. A Cover shared between multiple serving ware pieces was not uncommon for Hull--the company also offered a shared cover for its French handled casserole and soup/salad bowl, making duplication unnecessary. See attached image of the Hull catalog page listing the pieces.
The Chicken Cover sits loosely on the Server and is in the shape of a nesting chicken. It measures 13” x 10” and when placed on top of the platter, it raising the height of the set to 10” high. The high gloss finish is a deep chestnut brown. The Cover is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. There are no trademarks on the Cover.
The Chicken Server is a deep platter and measures 13 ⅝” by 10 ½” by 2”. Recessed in the center vertically, is a large stamped modernist retro drawing of a chicken with exaggerated tail feathers. Note: Hull also made a Rooster Platter and used a similar drawing, but the drawing was centered horizontal.
Stamped on the bottom of the Server is Hull’s House and Garden trademark, a lower case “hull” with a copyright symbol with the words, Oven Proof U.S.A. in script. Finished with a high gloss chestnut brown finish with ivory foam decorated rim. The Server is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing.
The set would pair well with mid-century modern, farmhouse or traditional décor--and its fun retro design would be great mixed in eclectic approach to decorating.
