Tin-glazed known as faïence in France, was extremely popular in the 19th century.  Some of the finest examples were made in the town of Quimper, France pronounced “kem-pair” beginning in the late seventeenth century.

This wonderful hand painted HENRIOT QUIMPER OCTAGONAL DESSERT PLATE in "soleil yellow" was manufactured by the Henriot factory which could trace its roots back to Guillaume du Maine who started his own Quimper factory around 1789. In 1968, the Henriot firm sold out to HB Quimper the rights to its molds, designs and marks.

The octagonal plate  measures 7 ⅝ wide.  The base is marked HENRIOT / QUIMPER / FRANCE / XOX, dating the piece between 1922 and 1942.  From about 1918 to 1942, Quimper factories used often used symbols as painters' signatures.  However, the HENRIOT / QUIMPER / FRANCE mark was used until the mid 1960s.

The yellow glazed OCTAGONAL PLATE features a male Breton peasant and a blue, green, red and orange floral motif.  The colors on the piece are vivid and gorgeous  It is in great condition other than a small amount of glaze smudging from the manufacturing process.

Today there is one commercially-active pottery factory in Quimper tracing its roots back to 1708 and Pierre Bousquet.  Since 2011, the firm has been run by Jean-Pierre Le Goff and signs the production “Henriot-Quimper."
