A wonderful early American STONEWARE POTTERY JUG with a tobacco spit glaze spot down one side.  Produced during the glazing process, tobacco spit marks or glazes were caused from a reaction of combining the wood ash, slip, salt, lime, sand and/or type of clay.  The dripped glazed looked like someone spit chewing tobacco on the piece, hence the name, tobacco spit.

The one-handle stoneware jug stands about 8" tall and is just under 6” wide at the base.  The mouth opening is 1 ¼” wide.  The exterior color ranges from taupe browns to tans.

Unlike many vintage and antique jugs, there are no chips.  There is a very small hairline crack near the base.  Additionally, there is a rough spot that has been glazed over so it has been part of the piece since it was first made.  See image for close-up.

Great piece of folk art and would make a great addition to someone's country French or farmhouse decorating.
