Wonderful piece of Sunderland lusterware!

Commemorating one of the greatest heroes in British military history, the MARQUIS OF WELLINGTON, this extremely rare SUNDERLAND COMMEMORATIVE PITCHER is similar to a museum piece on display at the Vancouver Museum.  A version is also pictured and discussed in the book, Commemorative Pottery, 1780 - 1900 by John and Jennifer May and described as one of the more elaborate commemoratives and a rare transfer of the Marquis Wellington.

The small pitcher with loop handle measures about 4 ½” high and 5 ½” wide from handle to spout with a 2 ¾” rim diameter. The neck of the cream-colored pitcher and the handle are edged with a gold lusterware leafy feather decoration.

Oval shaped transferware illustrations decorate either side of the body and are colored with bright enamels. The first illustration depicts the Marquis of Wellington carrying a sword while riding his horse. His body is turned to look back at the recently defeated village of Salamanca. The Marquis is positioned beside his regiment or battle flag, while what appears to be the Salamanca flag rests on the ground. He is riding towards a castle in the foreground.

On the opposite side is a castle with the Marquis’ flag, drum and cannon with the inscription:

“The greatest General of the age, Marquis Wellington,
Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo. Who defeated the French in every engagement
and gain’d immortal honour to the British Arms. At Talavera, Busaco,
Albuera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Madrid, etc. etc.
He drove the French out of Portugal and is now as successful in
rescuing Spain out of the usurpers hands.”

The small pitcher is in extremely good condition other than a few hairline cracks on the neck and an area on the rim, less than a ¼” long with missing glaze. Please review photos for more information.

The piece will ship insured with a signature required for delivery.

About the Marquis of Wellington: Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington born in 1769, was an Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman who was one of the leading political and military figures of 19th-century Britain, serving twice as Prime Minister. His victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 puts him in the first rank of Britain’s military heroes.

Wellington’s battle record is exemplary; he ultimately participated in some 60 battles during his military career and many of his tactics and battle plans are still studied in military academies around the world. As Prime Minister, he saw various ground-breaking reforms such as the Catholic Emancipation.
