A ROOKWOOD POTTERY Hull-Dobbs Ford Ashtray, circa 1954 with a brown gloss glaze. The ashtray features a Ford Motors emblem in the center of the bowl and the name, Hull-Dobbs on the rim.
Hull-Dobbs was a Ford dealership founded in Memphis in 1921. The dealership was located next to the landmark Peabody Hotel and became the largest sellers of Ford vehicles in the world. They were known for high-pressure sales techniques, which became known throughout the industry as the Hull-Dobbs sales method.
The ashtray is in excellent condition and has the impressed Rookwood logo and LIV on the back. There are a few kiln marks on the back.
About Rookwood Pottery: Rookwood Pottery was founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Storer. Storer named the new art pottery company Rookwood after the large number of crows that roosted in the trees of her family home. She was an active participant in the development of the art community in Cincinnati and at one time worked at the Frederick Dallas Pottery.
In 1891, Storer turned the management of the company over to W.W. Taylor. It was under his leadership that the art pottery company attained great significance and realized its greatest profit both in money and talent.
